This spicy seasoned black beans recipe delivers a flavorful and nutritious dish, perfectly seasoned with smoked paprika, chili powder, cumin, and fresh jalapeño. It’s a simple stovetop preparation that cooks quickly and can be garnished to your taste with cilantro, hot sauce, green onions, and more. Ideal as a side, filling for tacos, or adding protein to any meal.

  • Total Time: 23 minutes
  • Yield: 4 servings

Ingredients

Main Ingredients

  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 jalapeño, ribs and seeds removed, diced
  • 1 ½ teaspoons smoked paprika
  • 1 teaspoon chili powder
  • 1 teaspoon cumin
  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • ¼ teaspoon cayenne
  • 2 cans (15 oz each) black beans, drained and rinsed
  • 1 cup low-sodium vegetable broth or water, plus more as needed
  • Juice of 1 lime

Optional Garnishes

  • Fresh chopped cilantro
  • Dash or two of hot sauce
  • Sliced green onions
  • Sliced jalapeños

Instructions

  1. Heat Oil and Sauté Jalapeños with Spices: Heat the olive oil in a non-stick skillet over medium heat. Add the diced jalapeño and all the spices including smoked paprika, chili powder, cumin, oregano, salt, and cayenne. Sauté for about 3 minutes until the mixture is smooth and fragrant, allowing the flavors to meld.
  2. Add Beans and Broth, Simmer: Add the drained and rinsed black beans along with 1 cup of low-sodium vegetable broth or water to the skillet. Increase the heat to medium-high to bring the mixture to a boil, then reduce heat to medium-low to maintain a gentle simmer. Let it simmer uncovered for 15 minutes, stirring occasionally. Add more broth or water as needed if the beans start to dry out during cooking.
  3. Finish with Lime Juice and Garnishes: Stir in the juice of one lime to add brightness and balance to the dish. Taste and adjust seasoning if needed. Serve hot, garnished with your choice of fresh cilantro, hot sauce, sliced green onions, or additional jalapeño slices.

Notes

  • Sauté the spices in oil first for the best flavor infusion.
  • Drain and rinse canned beans to reduce sodium content and improve taste.
  • For extra heat, add an additional jalapeño and/or more cayenne pepper according to your spice preference.
  • If beans seem dry while simmering, add more broth or water to maintain moisture and prevent sticking.
  • For an oil-free version, sauté the jalapeño and spices in vegetable broth or water, though flavor may be less rich. Consider extra lime juice or salt to compensate.
