Ingredients
Wet Ingredients
- 180 g Sourdough Starter (active, fed, or discard)
- 2 Eggs
- 150 g Pumpkin Puree or sweet potato puree
- 80 g Natural unsweetened, unsalted Peanut Butter
Dry Ingredients
- 100 g Rolled Oats
- 200 g Whole Wheat Flour (plus extra for dusting)
Optional
- Pumpkin Seeds
- Olive oil spray for brushing
Instructions
- Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 180°C (350°F) to prepare for baking the treats.
- Combine Wet Ingredients: In a large bowl, whisk together the sourdough starter, eggs, pumpkin puree, and peanut butter with a fork until you get a smooth batter.
- Add Rolled Oats: Stir in the rolled oats until they are evenly coated with the batter.
- Form the Dough: Add the whole wheat flour and mix until a rough, slightly sticky dough forms. It doesn’t have to be perfectly smooth.
- Prepare Work Surface: Dust a clean surface with some whole wheat flour.
- Shape Dough: Tip the dough onto the floured surface and press it down gently with your fingertips. If sticky, dust the top with some flour as well.
- Roll Dough: Use a rolling pin to roll out the dough into a rough rectangle about 1/4 inch thick; avoid rolling it too thin since it won’t rise much in the oven.
- Cut Treats: Sprinkle the dough lightly with flour and use a cookie cutter to cut out shapes. You can re-roll the scraps to cut more pieces.
- Prepare for Baking: Place cut pieces onto a baking tray lined with parchment paper.
- Add Pumpkin Seeds (Optional): Lightly brush or spray the dough with water and sprinkle on pumpkin seeds if desired.
- Olive Oil Spray: Spray the dog treats lightly with olive oil for texture and a bit of shine.
- Bake: Bake the treats in the preheated oven at 180°C (350°F) for about 20 minutes until golden. If not fully baked through, flip them and bake for an additional 5 minutes.
- Cool: Transfer treats to a wire rack to cool completely; they will crisp up as they cool.
Notes
- Use either active, fed, or discard sourdough starter depending on availability.
- Pumpkin puree can be substituted with sweet potato puree for a slightly different flavor.
- Ensure peanut butter is natural, unsweetened, and unsalted to keep treats healthy for dogs.
- Keep the dough thickness around 1/4 inch, as the treats do not rise much when baking.
- These treats should be stored in an airtight container and can last about 1–2 weeks.
- Always introduce new treats gradually and consult with your vet if your dog has food allergies or dietary restrictions.
