Ingredients
Chicken and Seasoning
- 2 pounds boneless skinless chicken breasts
- 1 tablespoon cayenne pepper
- 1 teaspoon smoked paprika
- 1 teaspoon garlic salt
- 2 tablespoons brown sugar
Sauce and Cooking
- 1 cup honey
- 1 tablespoon white vinegar
- ¼ cup butter
Serving
- Buns for serving (brioche, hamburger, or pretzel buns recommended)
- Pickles for topping
- Optional toppings: ranch dressing or cole slaw
Instructions
- Prepare the Slow Cooker: Spray the bottom of a 6-quart slow cooker with non-stick spray and lay the chicken breasts in a single layer.
- Mix Seasonings: In a small bowl, combine cayenne pepper, smoked paprika, and garlic salt. Evenly sprinkle this seasoning mix over the chicken breasts.
- Add Brown Sugar: Sprinkle 2 tablespoons of brown sugar over the seasoned chicken.
- Drizzle Honey: Pour 1 cup of honey all over the chicken to add sweetness and balance the heat.
- Add Vinegar and Butter: Pour in 1 tablespoon of white vinegar for acidity and place ¼ cup butter on top to enrich the sauce and help tenderize the chicken.
- Cook Chicken: Cover the slow cooker and cook on LOW for 4 hours or on HIGH for 2 hours until the chicken is fully cooked and tender.
- Shred Chicken: Once cooked, use two forks to shred the chicken directly in the slow cooker, mixing it well with the sauce.
- Assemble Sandwiches: Serve the shredded hot honey chicken on soft buns and top with pickle slices. Optionally, add ranch dressing or cole slaw for extra flavor and texture.
Notes
- Store leftovers covered in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.
- This is a spicy recipe; to reduce heat, decrease cayenne pepper to ½ tablespoon, or increase to 2 tablespoons for extra spiciness.
- Recommended buns include brioche, hamburger, or pretzel buns for the best texture and flavor.
- Optional toppings such as ranch dressing or cole slaw complement the spicy-sweet chicken nicely.
