Muffuletta Sliders combine the bold flavors of Italian cold cuts and cheeses with a tangy homemade olive salad, all nestled inside soft Hawaiian rolls. This recipe offers a quick and easy twist on the classic New Orleans sandwich, perfect for game days, parties, or a flavorful snack.

  • Total Time: 40 minutes
  • Yield: 12 sliders

Ingredients

Quick Olive Salad (optional):

  • 3/4 cup pimento-stuffed green olives, drained
  • 1/2 cup mild Italian giardiniera, drained
  • 1/4 cup pitted Kalamata olives, drained
  • 1/4 cup pepperoncini, drained
  • 1 tablespoon capers, drained
  • 2 garlic cloves
  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano
  • 3 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil
  • 2 teaspoons red wine vinegar

Sliders:

  • Cooking spray
  • 1 package Hawaiian rolls (12-count)
  • 8 slices provolone cheese
  • 8 slices capicola
  • 10 slices Genoa salami
  • 8 slices mortadella
  • 1 cup homemade or store-bought olive salad
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted
  • 2 teaspoons sesame seeds

Instructions

  1. Prepare Olive Salad: Add all of the olive salad ingredients to a food processor and pulse until finely chopped and well combined. Set aside.
  2. Preheat Oven and Prepare Dish: Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Spray a 9×13-inch baking dish with cooking spray and set aside.
  3. Slice Rolls: Slice the Hawaiian rolls in half horizontally, keeping them intact to hold the fillings. Place the bottom half of the rolls in the prepared baking dish.
  4. Layer Cheese and Meats: Add the provolone cheese evenly over the bottom half of the rolls. Then layer the capicola, Genoa salami, and mortadella slices evenly on top of the cheese.
  5. Add Olive Salad: Using a slotted spoon to drain excess liquid, spoon the muffuletta olive salad evenly over the piled meats to prevent sogginess.
  6. Top and Finish: Place the top half of the Hawaiian rolls over the filling. Brush the surface with melted butter and sprinkle with sesame seeds for a golden crust.
  7. Bake the Sliders: Cover the baking dish loosely with foil and bake for 15 minutes. Remove the foil and continue baking for an additional 8 to 10 minutes, until the tops are golden brown and slightly crisp.
  8. Serve: Let the sliders cool slightly, then transfer to a cutting board and slice into individual portions. Serve warm and enjoy.

Notes

  • You can prepare the olive salad up to 3 days in advance and store it in the refrigerator to enhance flavor.
  • Use a slotted spoon when adding the olive salad to avoid making the sliders soggy.
  • If you prefer spicier sliders, consider adding hot giardiniera instead of mild.
  • The sliders are best served warm but can be wrapped and reheated the next day.
  • Hawaiian rolls provide the perfect soft, slightly sweet texture but can be substituted with other soft sandwich rolls if unavailable.
