This homemade spaghetti meat sauce is a delicious and beefy alternative to canned sauces. Made with lean ground beef, fresh aromatics, and a blend of canned tomatoes and dried herbs, this sauce simmers on the stovetop to develop rich flavors. Ideal for serving over pasta noodles or using in any recipe that calls for spaghetti sauce, this easy one-pot recipe takes only a few minutes to prepare and offers comforting homemade goodness.

  • Total Time: 45 minutes
  • Yield: 6 servings

Ingredients

Meat and Aromatics

  • 1 lb lean ground beef
  • 1 sweet onion, finely diced
  • 4 cloves garlic, minced or pressed
  • ½ teaspoon salt (for cooking meat)

Tomato Base and Seasonings

  • 1 can (15 oz) crushed tomatoes
  • 1 can (8 oz) tomato sauce
  • 1 can (14.5 oz) diced tomatoes with garlic, oregano, basil
  • 1 tablespoon granulated sugar
  • 2 teaspoons dried basil
  • ½ teaspoon dried oregano
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • ¼ teaspoon black pepper

Instructions

  1. Brown the Meat and Aromatics: In a large skillet or saucepan over medium-high heat, cook the ground beef, diced onion, minced garlic, and ½ teaspoon salt. Crumble the beef as you cook until no longer pink. Once cooked, drain excess grease to prevent a greasy sauce.
  2. Add Remaining Ingredients: Stir in the crushed tomatoes, tomato sauce, diced tomatoes with herbs, granulated sugar, dried basil, dried oregano, additional salt, and pepper until well combined.
  3. Simmer the Sauce: Bring the mixture to a low boil, then reduce heat to medium-low. Let the sauce simmer uncovered for at least 20-30 minutes, stirring occasionally. Simmer longer if time allows to deepen the flavors. Reduce heat if the sauce begins to boil or splatter.
  4. Serve: Spoon the hot meat sauce over freshly cooked pasta. Optionally, garnish with chopped parsley and shredded Parmesan cheese for added flavor and presentation.

Notes

  • Simmering the sauce for at least 20 minutes, preferably 30-45 minutes, enhances the flavor considerably.
  • Use fresh garlic minced or pressed; alternatives include jarred chopped garlic or garlic paste from the refrigerated section of the grocery store.
  • While the sauce simmers, prepare pasta so it’s ready when the sauce is done to serve immediately.
  • Nutrition info (183 calories per serving) applies to sauce only and does not include pasta noodles.
  • To reduce calories, serve with cauliflower rice or zucchini noodles instead of pasta.
