This Healthy Protein Puppy Chow Recipe is a deliciously simple, no-bake treat that mimics the classic puppy chow but with a nutritious twist. It’s naturally sweetened with maple syrup, packed with protein, gluten-free, and easy to make with just six ingredients. Perfect for a guilt-free snack or dessert that everyone will enjoy.

  • Total Time: 13 minutes
  • Yield: Approximately 8 servings

Ingredients

Chocolate Mixture

  • 3.5 ounces chocolate chips
  • ¼ cup creamy peanut butter (ingredients: peanuts and salt only)
  • ¼ cup maple syrup
  • 1.5 tablespoons coconut oil

Dry Ingredients

  • 4.5 cups Chex Mix cereal (gluten-free honey nut recommended)
  • ⅔ cup chocolate or vanilla protein powder (Orgain chocolate peanut butter flavor used)

Instructions

  1. Combine and melt the chocolate: Place the chocolate chips, peanut butter, maple syrup, and coconut oil together in a microwave-safe bowl. Microwave on high in 30-second intervals, stirring between each, until thoroughly melted and smooth. Use a whisk to fully combine into a thick chocolate mixture.
  2. Pour and mix: Add the Chex cereal into a large mixing bowl. Pour the melted chocolate mixture over the cereal and gently toss using a rubber spatula to evenly coat all the cereal pieces. Sprinkle the protein powder over the coated cereal, then toss again to ensure the protein powder is evenly distributed. Alternatively, transfer the coated cereal and protein powder into a ziplock bag and shake to coat evenly.
  3. Serve: Enjoy immediately for softer texture or spread the puppy chow onto a lined baking sheet and let it sit or chill in the refrigerator for a few minutes to firm up and achieve a crunchier texture.

Notes

  • Any Chex mix cereal works for this recipe; gluten-free honey nut is preferred and widely available.
  • Use creamy peanut butter with only peanuts and salt, or substitute with almond or cashew butter for a different flavor.
  • Choose a good-quality chocolate or vanilla flavored protein powder; Orgain chocolate peanut butter flavor is recommended.
  • Store in an airtight container at room temperature or in the refrigerator for longer freshness.
  • Freezer storage is possible in a freezer-safe container for up to 1 month.
