This French Dip Biscuit Bake combines the savory flavors of shredded beef roast and melted provolone cheese nestled inside buttery garlic biscuits. The biscuits are baked until golden and topped with tender beef and bubbly cheese, served alongside a flavorful au jus for dipping. It’s a comforting, crowd-pleasing casserole perfect for a hearty meal or party appetizer.

  • Total Time: 35 minutes
  • Yield: 6-8 servings

Ingredients

Biscuit Layer

  • 16 oz. can Pillsbury biscuit dough
  • 3 tablespoons butter, melted
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder

Filling

  • 1 1/2 lbs. Hormel beef roast, shredded
  • 8 oz. provolone cheese slices (6 slices)
  • Au jus from beef roast

Instructions

  1. Prepare the beef: Add the 1 1/2 lbs. shredded Hormel beef roast and its au jus to a crock pot set on high to heat thoroughly while you prepare the biscuits.
  2. Preheat oven and prepare tray: Preheat your oven to 350º F (175º C) and lightly grease or prepare a 9×13 inch baking tray for the biscuits.
  3. Mix garlic butter: Combine the melted butter with 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder and set aside. Use a pastry brush to apply this mixture onto the biscuits before baking.
  4. Bake biscuits: Place the biscuits evenly spaced in the prepared 9×13 tray. Brush the tops of each biscuit generously with the garlic butter mixture. Bake in the oven for about 12-15 minutes or until the biscuits are puffed and golden brown.
  5. Assemble biscuit bake: Once the biscuits are baked, carefully cut each biscuit in half horizontally with a paring knife. Layer the bottom halves with the warm shredded beef from the crock pot, then top with provolone cheese slices (use all 6 slices evenly distributed).
  6. Bake with cheese: Return the assembled biscuits to the oven and bake until the provolone cheese is melted, bubbly, and slightly golden, about 7-10 minutes.
  7. Serve: Place the biscuit tops back on each biscuit. Serve the French Dip Biscuit Bake warm with the au jus from the crock pot for dipping.

Notes

  • You can use a slow cooker to warm the beef overnight or throughout the day before assembling the biscuit bake.
  • For extra garlic flavor, add minced fresh garlic to the butter mixture.
  • If desired, use a mix of cheeses such as mozzarella or Swiss with the provolone for variation.
  • This recipe works well as a hearty appetizer or a main dish for a casual gathering.
  • Make sure to shred the beef finely for easier assembly and eating.
