This classic guacamole recipe combines ripe avocados with fresh lime juice, onion, tomato, garlic, cilantro, and optional jalapeno for a creamy yet chunky dip. Perfect as a snack or party appetizer, it’s quick to prepare and bursting with fresh flavors.

  • Total Time: 10 minutes
  • Yield: Approximately 2 cups (serves 4-6)

Ingredients

Avocado Base

  • 3 ripe avocados

Vegetables & Aromatics

  • 1/4 cup diced yellow onion (red onion works too)
  • 1 roma tomato, diced
  • 2 garlic cloves, minced
  • 1 jalapeno pepper, finely diced (optional)
  • 1/4 cup finely chopped cilantro leaves and stems

Seasoning & Flavor

  • 1 lime, juiced (about 2 tablespoons)
  • 1/2 teaspoon kosher salt or flaky sea salt, more or less to taste

Instructions

  1. Mash the Avocados: Peel the avocados and place the flesh in a medium bowl. Using a fork or an authentic molcajete, mash the avocado, leaving some chunks for texture. The goal is to achieve a creamy yet chunky consistency.
  2. Add Flavorful Ingredients: Add the lime juice, diced onion, tomato, minced garlic, salt, chopped cilantro, and jalapeno if using to the mashed avocado. Mix gently but thoroughly to combine all ingredients without over-mashing.
  3. Taste and Adjust Seasoning: Taste the guacamole and adjust the salt, lime juice, or cilantro according to your preference for a balanced fresh flavor.
  4. Garnish and Serve: Garnish with additional cilantro if desired. Serve immediately with tortilla chips or as a topping for your favorite Mexican dishes.

Notes

  • Nutrition information does not include tortilla chips.
  • Use ripe avocados for best flavor and texture.
  • If you prefer less heat, omit the jalapeno or remove seeds before dicing.
  • Storing guacamole: To keep guacamole from browning, press plastic wrap directly on its surface and refrigerate immediately.
