Ingredients
Main Ingredients
- 1 tablespoon olive oil
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- ½ cup minced onion (about 1 small onion)
- 3 cups shredded cooked chicken (rotisserie chicken recommended)
- 17.6 ounces fresh gnocchi (not dried)
- 1 teaspoon Italian seasoning
- ½ teaspoon kosher salt
- ¼ teaspoon black pepper
- 24 ounces pasta sauce
- 1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese
Panko Topping
- 2 tablespoons butter
- ¾ cup panko bread crumbs
- ¼ cup grated Parmesan cheese
- ½ teaspoon Italian seasoning
- 2 tablespoons freshly chopped basil
Instructions
- Preheat the broiler: Place an oven rack in the upper third of your oven and preheat the broiler on low to prepare for finishing the dish.
- Sauté aromatics and gnocchi: Warm the olive oil in a large oven-proof skillet over medium heat. Add the minced garlic and onion and cook for about 3 minutes until translucent. Add the gnocchi, stirring once after 2 minutes, and continue cooking for an additional 1-2 minutes until slightly golden.
- Add chicken and sauce: Stir in the shredded cooked chicken, pasta sauce, Italian seasoning, salt, and pepper. Mix well to combine all ingredients evenly. Reduce heat to medium-low, cover the skillet, and let it cook for 5 minutes to heat through and meld flavors.
- Prepare the panko topping: In a microwave-safe bowl, melt the butter. Stir in the panko bread crumbs, Parmesan cheese, and Italian seasoning until thoroughly combined.
- Assemble and broil: Remove the skillet lid and evenly sprinkle the shredded mozzarella cheese over the top of the gnocchi mixture. Distribute the prepared panko crumb topping evenly on top. Place the skillet under the preheated broiler for about 5 to 7 minutes, or until the cheese is melted and bubbly and the bread crumbs turn a golden brown color.
- Garnish and serve: Remove from the oven, sprinkle with freshly chopped basil, and serve warm.
Notes
- Use fresh gnocchi instead of dried for the best texture and flavor.
- Rotisserie chicken is a great shortcut that saves time and adds flavor.
- Be sure to use an oven-proof skillet to safely broil the dish without transferring.
- If you prefer a spicier sauce, add red pepper flakes along with Italian seasoning.
- Keep a close eye under the broiler to prevent burning; broiling times may vary depending on your oven.
