Ingredients
Meat and Vegetables
- 1 lb ground beef
- 1 cup diced bell peppers
- 1/2 cup diced onion
Dairy and Bread
- 2 cups shredded provolone cheese
- 1 large Italian bread loaf
- 3 tbsp butter, softened
Seasonings and Oils
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 tbsp olive oil
- 1 tsp salt
- 1/2 tsp black pepper
- 2 tbsp chopped parsley
Instructions
- Preheat the Oven: Set your oven to 375 degrees Fahrenheit (190 degrees Celsius) to prepare for baking the stuffed loaf.
- Cook the Ground Beef: Heat olive oil in a skillet over medium-high heat. Add the ground beef and cook until browned, breaking it apart with a spatula for even cooking.
- Add Vegetables and Seasoning: Stir in diced bell peppers, diced onions, salt, and black pepper. Cook the mixture until the vegetables are softened and fragrant, approximately 5 minutes.
- Prepare the Bread: Slice the Italian loaf lengthwise, then carefully hollow out the center to create a cavity for the filling without breaking the crust.
- Make Garlic Butter: In a small bowl, mix the softened butter with minced garlic until well combined, then spread this garlic butter evenly on the inside of the hollowed bread loaf.
- Stuff the Loaf: Fill the hollowed bread with the beef and vegetable mixture, pressing slightly to pack it evenly.
- Add Cheese Topping: Sprinkle the shredded provolone cheese generously over the stuffed mixture in the loaf.
- Bake: Place the stuffed loaf on a baking sheet and bake in the preheated oven for 15 minutes, or until the cheese is melted and bubbly.
- Garnish and Serve: Remove from the oven, garnish with freshly chopped parsley, slice into pieces, and serve warm.
Notes
- You can substitute provolone cheese with mozzarella or cheddar for different flavors.
- For extra heat, add sliced jalapeños or crushed red pepper flakes to the beef mixture.
- Use a serrated knife to slice the bread loaf cleanly without crushing it.
- Leftover stuffed bread can be reheated in the oven or microwave; avoid sogginess by reheating in the oven where possible.
- For a vegetarian version, substitute ground beef with sautéed mushrooms or plant-based crumbles.
