Ingredients
Base
- 40 saltine crackers (enough to cover a standard baking sheet)
Toffee Layer
- 1 cup (2 sticks) unsalted butter
- 1 cup packed brown sugar
Topping
- 1 1/2 cups semi-sweet chocolate chips
- 1/4 cup granulated sugar
- 1 tablespoon ground cinnamon
- 1/2 teaspoon sea salt, plus more for sprinkling
Instructions
- Prepare the Oven and Baking Sheet: Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C). Line a rimmed baking sheet with parchment paper or a silicone baking mat to prevent sticking and for easy cleanup.
- Arrange Crackers: Lay the saltine crackers in a single, even layer on the lined baking sheet, fitting as many as you can without overlapping.
- Make the Toffee Mixture: In a medium saucepan, melt the unsalted butter over medium heat. Once melted, add the brown sugar and stir continuously until the mixture starts to boil. Allow it to boil for 3 minutes without stirring to develop the toffee consistency.
- Pour Toffee Over Crackers: Carefully pour the hot toffee mixture evenly over the arranged saltines, using a spatula to spread it gently and cover all the crackers.
- Bake the Toffee: Place the baking sheet in the oven and bake for 5-7 minutes, or until the toffee mixture is bubbly and fully set on the crackers.
- Add Chocolate Chips: Remove the baking sheet from the oven and immediately sprinkle the semi-sweet chocolate chips evenly over the hot toffee. Let them sit for a minute or two to melt.
- Mix Cinnamon Sugar: While the chocolate melts, combine the granulated sugar and ground cinnamon in a small bowl.
- Top with Cinnamon Sugar and Sea Salt: Using a spatula, spread the melted chocolate evenly over the toffee and crackers. Then sprinkle the cinnamon sugar mixture over the top, followed by a light sprinkle of sea salt to enhance the sweetness and add a subtle salty contrast.
- Cool and Break: Let the toffee cool completely at room temperature, or place it in the refrigerator for faster setting. Once fully hardened, break into bite-sized pieces and serve.
Notes
- Use parchment paper or silicone mats to prevent sticking and simplify cleanup.
- For a richer chocolate flavor, substitute semi-sweet chocolate chips with dark chocolate chips.
- You can customize the cinnamon sugar topping by adjusting the ratio to your taste.
- Store leftovers in an airtight container at room temperature for up to one week.
- Ensure the toffee is fully cooled before breaking to avoid sticky pieces.
