Ingredients
Dough
- 1¼ cups warm water (95-105°F)
- ¼ cup granulated sugar
- 2 Tbsp. yeast (instant or platinum)
- ⅓ cup canola oil
- 1 tsp. salt
- 1 large egg
- 3½ cups all-purpose flour
Topping
- 4 tbsp melted butter
- 2 tbsp granulated garlic
- ¼ cup parmesan cheese (shredded or grated)
- 2 tsp parsley
Instructions
- Prepare baking sheet: Line a baking sheet with parchment paper or non-stick liner and set it aside for later use.
- Proof yeast: In a large bowl, combine warm water, sugar, and yeast. Allow the mixture to proof for 2-5 minutes until it becomes foamy, indicating that the yeast is active.
- Mix dough: Add canola oil, salt, egg, and flour to the yeast mixture. Stir until the ingredients are combined to form a dough. If the dough is too sticky, gradually add more flour until it is manageable.
- Shape rolls: Divide the dough into 16 equal pieces. Shape each piece into a smooth roll. For light and fluffy rolls, gently knead the dough before shaping. (See notes below for kneading tips.)
- Let dough rise: Place the shaped rolls on the prepared baking sheet and let them rise in a warm place for 5-10 minutes. For a cozy rising spot, you can place them near a warm fireplace or a similarly warm area in your kitchen.
- Apply topping: Brush the risen rolls generously with melted butter, then evenly sprinkle granulated garlic, parmesan cheese, and parsley over the top.
- Preheat oven and bake: Preheat your oven to 375ºF. Bake the rolls for 18-20 minutes until golden brown and cooked through.
- Final touch: Remove rolls from the oven and immediately spread additional melted butter on top before serving for extra flavor and moisture.
Notes
- Ensure that the water used to proof the yeast is between 95-105°F to activate the yeast properly without killing it.
- If the dough feels too sticky to work with, gradually add a tablespoon of flour at a time until manageable.
- Kneading is optional after mixing but can help develop gluten for fluffier rolls. Knead gently for 3-5 minutes before dividing and shaping.
- Allowing the rolls to rise in a warm, draft-free spot helps speed up the rising process.
- You can substitute canola oil with olive oil for a richer flavor if desired.
- Store leftovers in an airtight container and reheat in the oven or microwave before serving.
